What do we do?

The goal of our service is to support Māori families reduce the risk of SIDS and SUDI to their babies. In 2010 we plan to do this by;

  • Establishing and maintaining a National Infrastructure.
  • Providing policy advice and expertise to decision makers in key organisations.
  • Delivering effective training and education programmes to key stakeholders.
  • Developing standards and tools to support the Health Sector reduce SIDS and SUDI rates and
  • Providing evidence based, up to date information to key stakeholders.

The types of activities that we plan to undertake this year include;

  • Assessing sector capacity and capability to reduce SIDS for Māori, in priority areas.
  • Operating an information centre, including website, newsletters and advice on request.
  • Establishing and supporting a formal network for Māori SIDS Prevention.
  • Developing evidence based tools to support SIDS prevention strategies and activities.
  • Translating research findings into plain English and disseminating to our network.
  • Advising relevant groups, committees and forums on SIDS Prevention Strategies.
  • Working with organisations to develop and implement standards, policies and practices.
  • Delivering quality education programmes to appropriate audiences in priority areas.

 

Who do we work with?

Our focus is to work with National Organisations and with groups in geographical areas with high rates of Māori SIDS and SUDI. Our priority DHB areas for 2010 to 2011 are Northland, Counties Manukau, Waikato and Taranaki. However we are open to any opportunities that may lead to a significant reduction in SIDS and SUDI rates for Māori.
